Turkey's 'Historic' Broadcast of Holocaust Film Shoah

Image ISTANBUL // The director of a nine-hour documentary about the Holocaust called the decision by Turkey’s state-run television station to broadcast it last night historic. “This is proof of intelligence and courage,” Claude Lanzmann, a French filmmaker and director of Shoah, told The National by telephone from Paris yesterday. “It is an historical event. Turkey is the first [mainly] Muslim country to show a film like this.”

Bringing Hollywood to Turkey from Miami

With an annual turnover of 150 million dollars, in the Turkish film sector there is a fierce competition among the film distributors. Hollywood Needs a Turkish Story

The Turkish image in Hollywood has revolved around movies with no artistic value but which were used to spread propaganda such as “Midnight Express”, directed by Oliver Stone, or “Laurence of Arabia” and “Ararat”. The Turkish characters are shown only when there is a need for an evil Middle Easterner in a scene or when a villain is needed for a fight scene with the main character.

Mardin Becoming Popular with Hollywood

With its architectural, cultural and social texture and a history dating back some 7,000 years, Mardin has lured many local directors for movies, documentaries, TV series and clips.
 

After serving as the setting for “Ay Lav Yu,” a Turkish-American production, this historic city is preparing to serve as the setting for more Hollywood productions. American producer Manu Gargi and Turkish producer İlhan Kızılkaya recently paid a visit to Mardin, where they toured historic sites accompanied by Mardin Governor Hasan Duruer.
