Dear TurkofAmerica Reader,
It is my pleasure to introduce you to New York State, a place where tradition and innovation meet to form an exquisite cultural experience and a vibrant economy.
What is New York State?  We are home to nearly 20 million people, an economy of over $1.1 trillion, over 300 colleges and universities, and nearly 450 technical colleges.
New York City is recognized as the business capital of the United States and we understand that to maintain this success, we must continue pursuing new ideas, new businesses, and new partnerships with people from throughout the world.

Why should you invest in New York?  New York is an amazing place for business, perfectly located to give you a competitive edge in the global marketplace.  In 2009 New York State was home to 94 corporate headquarters of Fortune 500 companies, the most of any state in the United States.  New York gives you access to huge and lucrative markets; approximately half of the U.S. and Canadian population live within 750 miles of our borders.  New York is exceptionally strong in such sectors as agriculture, clean energy, life sciences, financial services, information technology/nanotechnology, and education.  In 2007, IBM’s Global Location Trends Report ranked New York State first in attracting investment among all North American destinations, including the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.  So, when you think of investing in the United States, think first of New York.

We are particularly proud of our history of welcoming newcomers to our state.  New York has received foreigners for nearly two centuries.  It is no accident that three of the greatest symbols of America’s commitment to international engagement – the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the United Nations – are located in New York.

Our links with Turkey are strong and long-standing.  Nine Turkish firms have offices in New York City and Long Island.  Over 1,700 Turkish students currently study at the State University of New York, earning degrees jointly conferred here and in Turkey.  We work closely with the Turkish Consulate in New York City to help new Turkish firms succeed here.

Of course, New York State is also an extraordinary place to visit.  From Times Square and Central Park in New York City, to Niagara Falls in Western New York and Montauk’s lighthouse in eastern Long Island, New York State is one of the most beautiful and varied places on earth.  Whatever you are looking for, you can find it here.

Welcome to New York!

Sincerely,

David A. Paterson
