May 6: Annual Turkish-American Parade
PATERSON, NJ – After a one-year absence, the Turkish-American parade returns to Paterson this weekend. The event will begin at noon on Sunday at the corner of Madison Avenue and Main Street. It will then proceed down Main Street into Clifton, where a festival will be held at Clifton Park.
Last year, in response to the city?s decision to impose fees, the Turkish parade was held entirely in Clifton. But after a court challenge by the organizers of the annual Dominican parade, the city dropped its attempt to require private groups holding parades to pay for police and public works employees assigned to them. This year, the police department will not be using any overtime to cover the Turkish parade, according to Director Glenn Brown. He said some rearranging of shifts allowed the city to provide coverage with officers working straight time. Whenever possible, Brown said, that will be the goal for other city parades.
