Turkish Drama 'Mustang' Bought by Cohen Media

Image Cohen Media Group has acquired all North American distribution rights to Turkish drama “Mustang” following its screening in the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes. The film,  the feature directorial debut of Turkish-French filmmaker Deniz Gamze Ergüven, centers on five  young sisters dealing with sexual repression. CMG plans to release the film theatrically in early 2016.

The distribution agreement was negotiated by CMG’s John Kochman and Ram Murali, head of acquisitions and sales for Kinology.

“Mustang” is set in a Black Sea coastal village in modern-day Turkey, where five orphaned sisters live with their grandmother, an aunt and an abusive uncle. On the last day of school, the girls celebrate their summer freedom by innocently frolicking in the surf with some boys but a stern neighbor tells the grandmother that they are behaving inappropriately — resulting in severe punishment.

Jay Weisberg gave the film a positive review for Variety, calling it “beautifully mounted.” (Dave McNary, http://variety.com)
