The AI Imperative

Saida Mammadova-Advisor to the SOCAR CEO

Artificial Intelligence has become omnipresent. Unsurprisingly, it dominated the agenda across the vast majority of our recent reunion discussions at Harvard Business School.

AI is no longer just another technological advancement; it is rapidly becoming one of the most powerful engines of economic prosperity.

For nations, AI adoption and execution are evolving into strategic imperatives, underpinning competitiveness, productivity, and long-term economic resilience. For businesses, AI is a transformative force that demands not incremental optimization but fundamental reinvention. Leadership today is increasingly defined by the ability to reimagine business models, redesign operating models, and capitalize on the unprecedented opportunities AI continues to create.

The scale of this transformation is extraordinary. Estimates suggest that AI could contribute as much as USD 20 trillion to the global economy over the next five years. To put that into perspective, this is roughly four times the size of Germany's economy, the world’s third-largest economy.

Capital markets are already reflecting this shift. The Magnificent Seven—Microsoft, NVIDIA, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Tesla, and Apple—continue to shape global equity markets while driving the next generation of AI and digital innovation.

Capital expenditure by the five leading hyperscalers - Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Meta, and Oracle - is projected to be north of USD 800 billion by 2027. For perspective, this surpasses the combined defense budget of G7 countries excluding the United States. Under different scanerios (ranging from constrained to accelarated compute demand) total capital expenditure needed for AI-driven data centers is estimated to grow exponentially measured by trilions (up to USD 8 trillion) over the next 5-year window.

These are not merely staggering balance-sheet items; these estimates represent a historic capital reallocation and critical resource distribution race amongst the investors and nations to secure competitive advantage on the global arena.

Navigating the Friction of a New Paradigm

Naturally, disruption of this magnitude and pace is accompanied by skepticism and legitimate concerns:
-power supply and infrastructure stress: how to reconcile the widening asymmetry between soaring compute demands and lagging power supply & the grid capacities?
-regulatory friction: how to ensure agile governance frameworks to ensure responsible AI deployment?
-socioeconomic disparity: will AI bring about systemic labor displacement and economic inequality?
etc.

There are no definitive answers to these questions yet, as we are in a fluid situation. Nevertheless, my reflection particularly regarding AI's impact on employment is less pessimistic than much of the prevailing narrative. History offers valuable perspective. Every major technological inflection point - from the steam engine and industrialization to the internet and the digital revolution - fundamentally reshaped industries, displaced certain occupations, and created entirely new categories of work. While transitions were not often easy, persistent structural unemployment did not become the defining outcome.

What has consistently determined success is society's ability to adapt. Reskilling and upskilling are no longer optional—they have become permanent features of professional life. In reality, continuous learning, unlearning, and relearning should already be the default operating model for individuals and organizations alike.

The Premium on Human Cognition

AI literacy will undoubtedly become a foundational competency for employment. Yet some capabilities will become even more valuable precisely because they remain deeply human. Uniquely human capabilities will command an unprecedented premium:
-emotional diagnostic: Problems are experienced emotionally, not analytically. Identifying the right problem to solve remains an exclusively human trait.
-narrative leadership: The sensemaking and sensegiving— the ability to create meaning, align people around a shared purpose, and translate complexity into clarity.
-ethical stewardship: Integrity, moral judgment, empathy, creativity, trust are becoming strategic differentiators in an AI-enabled world.
etc.

The Way Forward

Whether today's enthusiasm ultimately proves to be an AI bubble is, in many ways, secondary. The broader direction is unmistakable: AI is fundamentally reshaping how value is created, how organizations compete, and how economies grow. This transformation is not only inevitable—it is irreversible.

The winners of this new era will not simply be those who deploy AI. They will be those who fundamentally rethink how they work, lead, innovate, and create value alongside it. Our greatest challenge is not to resist this transformation, but to shape it responsibly - embracing continuous learning while ensuring that human creativity, judgment, ethics, and purpose remain firmly at the center of an AI-powered future.
