Turkish Referee Cakir to Oversee Champions League Final
MADRID - Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir has been appointed by UEFA to referee the Juventus-Barcelona Champions League final, to be played in Berlin on June 6, while England's Martin Atkinson will take charge of the Europa League final between Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk and Sevilla, to be held in Warsaw on May 27.
Through his refereeing career, Cakir has called 70 UEFA games, four of which were during the 2014-2015 Champions League and three in Europa League.
Barcelona has already played for Cuneyt Cakir in three official Champions League matches: Rubin Kazan-Barcelona, a 1-1 tie in the group stage in 2010-11; Barcelona-Chelsea, a 2-2 tie in the semifinals in 2011-12; and Benfica-Barcelona, a 0-2 result in the 2012-13 group stage.
Meanwhile, the 44-year-old Atkinson, who will referee the Europa League final in the Stadion Narodowy in Warsaw, has been an international referee since 2006 and has refereed 67 games for UEFA. (Herald Tribune, http://www.laht.com)
