Unrest Overseas Worries Turkish Community In Chicago

Ali Osman is visiting Chicago from Turkey. He never expected calls home would be to inquire about his family?s safety in the midst of an attempted military coup. ?I?m worried about the situation,? he says. ?My little son was crying. He thinks there will be a war.? Osman?s wife and two young sons live in Istanbul, where military members have closed bridges and taken over the airport. Tayfur Arsu, co-owner of Lavash Restaurant in the West Loop, says he heard things had taken a turn for the better. But he, and others with family there, know the situation remains uncertain, with Turkey?s president telling people to protest in the streets. Orhan Ulger, head of the Turkish American Cultural Alliance, says the situation was too fluid to call. ?The problem now is every five minutes you hear something different,? he says.
