Essen, Germany- One of Germany's most important centers of coal and steel production, Essen is leaving the typical identity of a manufacturing city behind. Chosen as a cultural capital of Europe, every corner of the city has turned into a large construction site. Essen's population numbers 600,000 and it plays host to the headquarters of 10 of Germany's largest 100 firms.

TIME LightBox talks to Mary Ellen Mark as part of our series “The Photo That Made Me”, in which photographers tell us about the one photograph they made that they believe jump-started their career, garnered them international attention, or simply reflected their early interest in photography. In 1965, I was in Trabzon in eastern Turkey on a Fulbright scholarship. I would get up every morning and walk around the streets and look for photographs. One day, I came across this beautiful young girl, Emine. She was wearing a very babyish dress and a bow in her hair. I photographed her, and she invited me to come to her home.

What I Learned about Localization in Turkey

By Diarmuid Mallon - When visiting Turkey a couple years ago, I wanted to get off the beaten tourist track. So, I went up the Bosporus on the regular commuter ferry toward the Black Sea. I got almost all the way to the top, and had a wonderful lunch at a small town. To get back to Istanbul, I got on a local bus and paid the driver. Off we went. Within a few more stops, the bus was past standing room only. By the time we got to town, it was like a Guinness Book of Records contest for how many people could possibly pack onto the thing.

Family Heading to Turkey to Seek Missing NY Woman

Sarai Sierra's family was last in touch with her on Monday, the day she was supposed to start her journey home. The 33-year-old mother of two had been in Turkey on her own since Jan. 7.
