East or west, no matter where you go in the world, chances are you will encounter Turks. Maybe on a calm island in the middle of an ocean, maybe at an ice cream parlor in Japan, during a cab ride in Israel, in a village in Manchuria or on a construction site in Saudi Arabia. I do not even want to include the European countries in these examples.

The vote of 600 thousand Turks in Germany in the last elections has been a serious determining factor for the race between Angela Merkel and Gerhard Schröder. Had the Turkish voters not have supported Schröder, the outcome could have been different for Merkel, who won the race by a narrow margin.

Pittsburg, a small city with a population of 340,000, is home to the central offices of seven of the USA’s top 500 companies. The companies create 50 billion dollars worth of business volume in the city. Colorado, which in contrast has a population of 4.5 million, is home to 10 of the biggest companies and these companies create an economic cushion of 72 billion dollars.

The Armenian genocide allegation is one the leading questions that Turks living in US respond to. The claim is that Armenians, between one to two million in number, had been massacred. Responding to this claim with “they were not killed systematically but lost their lives during a war,” became a vicious cycle.

We consider ourselves to be living in the most beautiful country of the world and repeatedly claim that we have the best landscape, the best beaches, and the best food.

There’s an old lady in our neighborhood. She’s probably around eighty. Every time I pass in front of their door, I ask her how she is. I can see her happiness when she hears me speak Turkish. She seems to have a craving for a passerby or an acquaintance saying hello.

When I was an elementary school student, politicians, ordinary citizens and academicians, whose opinions were asked on state television, would all talk about theories in which “foreign forces” were involved. Every time I heard this argument, I used to visualize men behind masks, holding automatic guns, conspiring to weaken our beautiful country!
