Time to Go Home

Yasin Yağcı – The Netherlands
Most Turks who took up the European adventure were planning to return to their homeland in a few years time. Things ended up in a much different way, though. Most newcomers embraced Europe as their new land. Their children, even grandchildren were born and grew up in their new countries. For the later generations, Europe was the homeland.

Just like it happened in 2000 during Bill Clinton’s tenure, the Armenian genocide resolution was adopted by a sub-committee, but was taken back before being put to a vote of the full congress. I would like to answer the question of, ‘what happened for the resolution to disappear so suddenly, just when the number of members of congress, who supported it, had reached the level of 230 something, and it looked certain that it would be adopted?’ by looking at what happened behind the scenes.

The main reason for this was the political erosion in both countries. If we look closely we can see the similar structures of the erosions.

Geçtiğimiz günlerde bir haftalığına aile ziyaret amacıyla İstanbul’a gittim. Yağmurlu bir hafta olmasına rağmen İstanbul özlemimi bastırma firsatını buldum. Bir hafta boyunca Anadolu yakasında oturduğum halde hemen her gün Avrupa yakasına geçtim, ailem ve arkadaşlarımla hasret giderdim.

The hurricane that struck the gulf coasts of New Orleans and Mississippi has left the same deep marks as the August 17, 1999 earthquake in Izmit. There is a big difference between these two disasters. The earthquake destroyed a big geographic area with a force of 7.4 Richter in the middle of the night.
