The Anatolian territory, which has been located on the migration lines for centuries, has hosted millions of immigrants. Jews who fled from Spain to İstanbul in 1492, refugees from the Caucasus who came to various Anatolian cities as a result of the Crimean War of the 1850s and the Ottoman-Russian War in 1870s, victims of Balkan Wars who moved from Bulgaria and Greece… The paths of all refuges crossed in Anatolia.

What is it like to be a Sephardic Jew, whose parents originally immigrated to the United States of America from Istanbul, growing up in Brooklyn New York?  I was part of a huge, warm, gracious, close, extended family.  Members prepared wonderful unique foods, lived nearby, saw each other all the time and spoke a strange language.  Although the words sounded like Spanish, it was not the language of New York’s Puerto Rican community.

“…dwell in the best of the land, each beneath his wine and his fig tree, with silver and with gold, with wealth and with cattle...".
A letter – original held at National Bibliothek in Paris -  sent by Rabbi Yitzhak Sarfati who migrated to Turkey in the first part of 15th century to Jewish communities in Germany and Hungary inviting his co-religionists to leave the torments they were enduring in Christendom and to seek safety and prosperity in Turkey. His few words in his letter tell us a lot.

Since David Paterson became governor, New York State has faced enormous political challenges, from the state’s budget gap of more than $4 billion to the state’s worst fiscal crisis since the mid-1970s.
In his first speech as Governor, on March 17, 2008, one of the crucial issues on which Governor Paterson led the charge for New York’s future was the putting forth of a statewide renewable energy strategy to harness the power of the sun and wind.

Terry McAuliffe and I go back a long way. In 1991, my travel agency, AIM Travel, serviced Terry’s law firm McAuliffe-Kelly-Rafaelli’s travel needs. I was in Terry’s office at least three times a week, delivering airline tickets. In 1995, Terry was with President Clinton’s team, helping him to get reelected. I was there again with my cousin Sahir Erozan to raise money and host events at our family restaurant, called Cities, in Washington, D.C. We have done fund raisers, presidential dinners, inauguration parties and Terry did not miss any of them. They were his events!

The biggest difference between immigrants who have citizenship and those who hold green cards is the right to vote, which green card holders do not have. Within the unknown numbers of Turks in the diaspora, Turkish-Americans are known to vote in larger numbers for the Republican Party, which has a better reputation in terms of relations with Turkey.

Turkish Doctors in the United States

According to author Marc Angel’s book, La America: The Sephardic Experience in the United States, Jack David Hananiah was the first Sephardic Jew in New York to become a dentist. The date on which Hananiah received a dentist’s diploma was June 8, 1917. Hananiah was not only a Sephardic Jew, but he was also a Turkish-born citizen of the Ottoman Empire. He was born in Smyrna (Izmir), an ancient city in Western Turkey. Unfortunately, later he was murdered in his office by a former patient. His brother Ely also became a dentist.

In August 2000,  United States President Bill Clinton was the keynote speaker at a charity event held in order to get Congress member Richard Gephardt reelected for another term. Bill Clinton came to this event, held in Washington DC at the Mayflower Hotel, fresh from the Israeli and Palestinian Peace Talks with Yasser Arafat and Ehud Barak.  In fact, he was a little late because of that.
