Since David Paterson became governor, New York State has faced enormous political challenges, from the state’s budget gap of more than $4 billion to the state’s worst fiscal crisis since the mid-1970s.
In his first speech as Governor, on March 17, 2008, one of the crucial issues on which Governor Paterson led the charge for New York’s future was the putting forth of a statewide renewable energy strategy to harness the power of the sun and wind.

Terry McAuliffe and I go back a long way. In 1991, my travel agency, AIM Travel, serviced Terry’s law firm McAuliffe-Kelly-Rafaelli’s travel needs. I was in Terry’s office at least three times a week, delivering airline tickets. In 1995, Terry was with President Clinton’s team, helping him to get reelected. I was there again with my cousin Sahir Erozan to raise money and host events at our family restaurant, called Cities, in Washington, D.C. We have done fund raisers, presidential dinners, inauguration parties and Terry did not miss any of them. They were his events!

Turkish Doctors in the United States

According to author Marc Angel’s book, La America: The Sephardic Experience in the United States, Jack David Hananiah was the first Sephardic Jew in New York to become a dentist. The date on which Hananiah received a dentist’s diploma was June 8, 1917. Hananiah was not only a Sephardic Jew, but he was also a Turkish-born citizen of the Ottoman Empire. He was born in Smyrna (Izmir), an ancient city in Western Turkey. Unfortunately, later he was murdered in his office by a former patient. His brother Ely also became a dentist.

In August 2000,  United States President Bill Clinton was the keynote speaker at a charity event held in order to get Congress member Richard Gephardt reelected for another term. Bill Clinton came to this event, held in Washington DC at the Mayflower Hotel, fresh from the Israeli and Palestinian Peace Talks with Yasser Arafat and Ehud Barak.  In fact, he was a little late because of that.

It was in 1824 that the American government posted its first American Consul, David Offley, to the western Anatolian city of Izmir.  It was only after thirty years of American efforts to establish formal relationships that the Ottomans agreed to open this consulate.

The votes of France and Holland against the European Constitution showed how far the European Union is from its goal of being united in a similar manner as the United States of America, and the controversy over Eastern expansion in 2005 and 2007 has inflamed the arguments. The communication problems and the attitude of the European Union, which is composed of 27 countries and has 23 official languages, are issues frequently made the topic of humor.
