Born in Samsun, Muharremoğlu earned her undergraduate degree at Boğaziçi University, in electrical and electronics engineering in 1998. She moved to the United States to attend Boston University, where she earned a graduate degree in electrical engineering in 2000.

The Most Influential Turkish-American Women #19 - Çiğdem Balım Harding is a senior lecturer in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at Indiana University. Balım is also the director of graduate studies and the director of language instruction in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures. She has also been a senior examiner of Turkish Literature A1 for the International Baccalaureate Organization (examining World Literatures in Translation and Turkish Literature) since 1996. She received her B.A. at Hacettepe University in 1974 and her Ph.D. at the University of Washington in 1979.
