Turkey's First Locally Built Research Ship at Sea

Image Turkey’s first national research ship, TÜBİTAK Marmara, which is purposed to observe undersea operations of every kind as well as to conduct oil exploration activities, was put to sea Feb. 17. “Turkey has proved that it is also capable of building research ships, along with freight ships. Hopefully, it will be able to export these ships also,” Science, Industry and Technology Minister Nihat Ergün said during the landing event of the ship in Istanbul. “The studies to be done with this ship will boost our country’s opportunities to benefit from the seas and will create a substantial surplus for our country.”

Certificate Authorities Band Together to Boost Security

Image At a time when certificate authorities are under attack by cybercriminals, a group of companies has formed an alliance to try to improve the security of the CA infrastructure. Members of the Certificate Authority Security Council, announced Thursday, include Comodo, Trend Micro, Symantec, GMO GlobalSign, Entrust, DigiCert and Go Daddy. Some of the companies have recently suffered compromises of their CA systems.

TCA to Award 250th Study Abroad in Turkey Scholarship to American Minority Student

Image Francisco Gonzales of the University of North Texas (UNT) will become the 250th scholarship recipient under TCA's Study Abroad in Turkey Scholarships for American Minority Students.  The TCA Study Abroad Scholarship program was established in 2008 to support study abroad opportunities for African American, Hispanic American and Native American students.

ATAA Remembers Fallen Hero, Officer Mustafa Akarsu

ImageOn Friday, February 1, 2013, a suicide bomber carrying a hand grenade and 13 pounds of TNT attempted to enter the US Embassy in Ankara.  US Embassy Security Officer Mustafa Akarsu recognized the threat and immediately placed himself between the suicide bomber and the general public he was protecting.  The suicide bomber, realizing his plan had failed, detonated the device, killing Officer Akarsu. Officer Akarsu was survived by his widow Yasemin, son Sami (18), and daughter Hilal (14).

Turkey's $5 Billion Smart-Grid Plan Seen Boosting Ties With U.S.

Image Turkey will spend $5 billion on smart power grids by 2015 to boost network efficiency, allowing North American companies to expand, the U.S. government said. The U.S. sees “substantial opportunities for closer cooperation between the Turkish government and energy companies and U.S. companies that provide smart-grid technologies,” according to a statement from the consulate in Istanbul, which will hold a conference in the city tomorrow on grid investments. Turkey, forecasting annual power-demand growth of 6.3 percent in the next two decades, has already lured investors including General Electric Co. as its energy industry expands. The country is bucking the trend of most emerging European nations, where retail electricity use trails growth in incomes.

Iran, Turkey to Set Up Joint University Soon

Image TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Deputy Minister of Science, Research and Technology Arsalan Qorbani announced that Tehran and Ankara plan to establish a joint university in the near future to further expand the two countries' scientific and technological cooperation. "Iran and Turkey's joint university will be set up in Iran's Tabriz city and Turkey's Wan city," Qorbani told FNA on Monday.

Taiwan to Use Mexico, Turkey as Detours to Trade with U.S., EU

Image Taipei, Feb. 11 (CNA) Taiwan will use Mexico and Turkey as gateways to stepping up trade with the United States and the European Union, so as to reduce the impact of the free trade agreements (FTAs) between South Korea and the two major economies, according to the country's main trade promotion body. The Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) said in a recent document that it will not only set up business centers in Mexico City and Istanbul, but also hold seminars and lead delegations to the two markets to further trade ties.
