Turkey's Start-Up Scene Comes of Age
ANTALYA — With Turkey displaying that rare commodity among European economies — growth — the country has attracted a great deal of attention from venture capitalists looking for investments. Burak Buyukdemir, founder of the Startup Turkey conference, says the last six months have seen a big change in Turkey’s start-up scene, fueled by Amazon’s deal last December to acquire a minority stake in online flower retailer, Ciceksepeti. This follows eBay’s purchase of GittiGidiyor, one of the country’s leading marketplaces.

Back in November, the city announced it would be replacing the iconic Crown Victoria with the first-ever purpose-built yellow cab. It released a questionnaire seeking input on what New Yorkers want from their new cab, as well as seeking votes on which of three designs—from Ford, Nissan and Turkish light-truck manufacturer Karsan—people preferred. Last week, the results of the survey were released, and today Karsan leaked the news that nearly 2/3s of the voters like their model, the most unusual of the three for sure. This was compared to 42 percent that liked the Nissan and 38 percent that liked the Ford. (The question was "yes-or-no," not "pick a favorite.")

Ismail Aktekin is a simple farmer in Turkey's Konya province. But history may also remember him as a local Henry Ford. More than 40 years ago Aktekin started a cottage industry that built crude vehicles for his fellow farmers. These days Aktekin's grandson, also named Ismail, runs the business and says his shop produces about three of the vehicles per month. He estimated that some three-quarters of the local farmers own one. Demand these days is so great that several shops across several provinces are working full-tilt. Hundreds of the vehicles are produced every year in these small shops, most of them the size of a garage, usually located in villages. According to some estimates, there are roughly 250 people involved in their production and the sales are mainly in Turkey, although one farmer mentioned exports as far as Afghanistan.
