by Carol Caldwell- photography by Hollis Bennett - From the moment we first met, Cano Ozgener put a spell on me. The man is a magus. Everything he touches turns to gold. CanoIn his first life, Cano turned himself from apprentice at his father’s business designing jewelry in Istanbul to a brilliant career in the New World at engineering research, and now, in Nashville to stay, he has a collection of Turkish meerschaum pipes unrivaled anywhere on earth. From this obsession must have stemmed his next manifestation as maker and purveyor of fine, handmade cigars. Cano, pronounced Johno, turned the profits from the sale of his cigar empire, CAO, into a sprawling, modern compound seated next to the landing strips at John Tune airport. This alchemist with the golden touch then tapped his magic wand and brought forth OZ Arts, a non-profit organization meant to foster the visual and performing arts in Middle Tennessee.
Malware writers keep working to make their nasty products evade detection by popular antivirus tools, and the antivirus vendors naturally try to keep up, or even get ahead. Every couple of months, German independent antivirus lab AV-Test releases a report that lets the vendors (and users) know how they're doing in three areas: Protection, Performance, and Usability. In the latest test a few products stand out not specifically because of their scores, but because of how those scores have changed. The same was true in a recently-released test by Austrian lab AV-Comparatives.
Chobani Greek yogurt, with a new processing plant in Twin Falls, Idaho, has won a USDA contract to supply its product to the National School Lunch Program this fall. USDA announced a pilot program last month to include Greek yogurt in school lunches in four states and opened solicitations, which closed July 22. On Friday, the agency announced that Chobani won the $279,720 contract to supply nearly 200,000 pounds of blueberry, strawberry, vanilla, and plain Greek yogurt from September through November to schools in Idaho, New York, Tennessee, and Arizona.

A British court ruled on Tuesday that Turkey’s Çukurova Group must pay $1.57 billion to Russian telecom firm Altimo in 60 days to recover Turkcell shares appropriated for a defaulted loan. The British Privy Council’s rule opens the way to end an eight-year dispute between major shareholders, yet it is unclear how the financially troubled Çukurova is going to find this amount of money in two months. In May, Turkey’s Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF) seized more than 10 companies belonging to Çukurova’s owner Mehmet Emin Karamehmet, citing Çukurova’s bleak financial record and its inability to pay its heavy debt to the TMSF in the foreseeable future.
Billed as the “America’s Doctor and America’s Rabbi Israel tour,” Rabbi Shmuley Boteach’s non-profit, This World: The Jewish Values Network, on Wednesday announced plans to bring FOX TV’s Dr. Mehmet Oz to Israel for a week beginning July 25. The trip is being sponsored by casino magnate and Jewish mega-donor Sheldon Adelson. “For a long time, I’ve wanted to bring Mehmet and Lisa [Mrs. Oz] to Israel given their amazing friendship with our community and the global impact Mehmet makes through every medium to preserve and protect human life,” said Rabbi Shmuley.
Washington -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture has selected New York as one of four states that will be allowed to test Greek yogurt as a meat alternative in subsidized school lunches this fall. Beginning in September, the USDA will allow the protein-rich yogurt to be served in federal school lunch programs in New York, Arizona, Idaho and Tennessee, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said today. The selection of the four states for the pilot program follows a USDA decision in January that allowed Greek yogurt to be classified as a protein in the federal school lunch program. Greek yogurt has about twice the protein of regular yogurt.
Omer Asik, the Houston Rockets’ starting center last season, has formally asked the team to trade him in the wake of the Dwight Howard signing, ESPN.com’s Brian Windhorst is reporting. The Rockets have “no plans” to trade Asik, however, and have turned down all offers so far, according to the report. The 27-year-old, who started all 82 games last season after serving as Joakim Noah’s backup in Chicago for two years, contacted the team to ask for a trade “shortly after” Howard announced his decision on Friday night.
Hikmet Ersek, chief executive officer of Western Union Holdings Inc., a US-based global money transfer company, is not willing to write-off cash transfers in a hurry despite technological advances. The company’s net profit fell 14% to $212 million (around Rs.1,270 crore) in the March quarter from $247 million a year ago, as traditional money transfer routes face competition from new digital and mobile products. But Western Union, too, Ersek said in an interview on Tuesday, is slowly but surely embracing digitization by allowing people in India, for instance, to receive remittances from the US and the UK directly into their bank accounts instead of as cash transfers.
Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) have begun qualification testing on the hybrid rocket motor that will provide propulsion to their Dream Chaser vehicle in space. The initiation of testing is part of the company’s Commercial Crew Integrated Capability (CCiCap) milestones, as they continue to set their sights on transporting NASA astronauts to the ISS. The ETA – provisionally named “Eagle”, per L2 – was recently shipped to California from her home in Colorado, ahead of a series of tests that will be conducted through the summer.
