Certificate Authorities Band Together to Boost Security
At a time when certificate authorities are under attack by cybercriminals, a group of companies has formed an alliance to try to improve the security of the CA infrastructure. Members of the Certificate Authority Security Council, announced Thursday, include Comodo, Trend Micro, Symantec, GMO GlobalSign, Entrust, DigiCert and Go Daddy. Francisco Gonzales of the University of North Texas (UNT) will become the 250th scholarship recipient under TCA's Study Abroad in Turkey Scholarships for American Minority Students. The TCA Study Abroad Scholarship program was established in 2008 to support study abroad opportunities for African American, Hispanic American and Native American students.
On Friday, February 1, 2013, a suicide bomber carrying a hand grenade and 13 pounds of TNT attempted to enter the US Embassy in Ankara. US Embassy Security Officer Mustafa Akarsu recognized the threat and immediately placed himself between the suicide bomber and the general public he was protecting. The suicide bomber, realizing his plan had failed, detonated the device, killing Officer Akarsu. Officer Akarsu was survived by his widow Yasemin, son Sami (18), and daughter Hilal (14).
