TCA to Award 250th Study Abroad in Turkey Scholarship to American Minority Student
Francisco Gonzales of the University of North Texas (UNT) will become the 250th scholarship recipient under TCA's Study Abroad in Turkey Scholarships for American Minority Students. On Friday, February 1, 2013, a suicide bomber carrying a hand grenade and 13 pounds of TNT attempted to enter the US Embassy in Ankara. US Embassy Security Officer Mustafa Akarsu recognized the threat and immediately placed himself between the suicide bomber and the general public he was protecting. The suicide bomber, realizing his plan had failed, detonated the device, killing Officer Akarsu. Officer Akarsu was survived by his widow Yasemin, son Sami (18), and daughter Hilal (14).
