Standard Bank's Exit From Turkey

Image New Zeland - Standard Bank’s decision to largely exit from Turkey has been welcomed by the market and analysts alike. Standard’s share price has continued its upward trend since it announced last year the group was divesting from previous emerging market investments to focus on African expansion. It rose to a new high of R113,50 a few weeks before the Turkey announcement. Some analysts estimate it could hit R115 before being fully valued. A year ago it was trading at R90.

Dayton Sells Bomberger Center to Ahiska Turkish American Community

Image The city of Dayton is selling the Bomberger Center to the Ahiska Turkish American Community Center of Dayton. The 22,000-square-foot center, at 1306 E. Fifth St., will be used as a multi-purpose community center for education, recreation and community services for the Ahiska Turkish community and others. Some of the services to be offered will include English as Second Language (ESL) and citizenship classes.

Turkey Embraces Social Media

Image Despite Turkey's poor record on press freedom, the country is witnessing an explosion in Internet-based social media, ranking the 4th largest in global usage on Facebook and 8th largest on Twitter. These rankings have made social media a powerful rival to Turkey's mainstream media. But concerns are growing that the development could further polarize Turkish society. Coca-Cola Recommends Stock Split

Image Coca-Cola is offering shareholders a two-for-one split for their stock. Chief Executive Officer Muhtar Kent announced the recommendation Wednesday at the company's annual shareholder meeting at the Cobb Galleria, eliciting a rousing round of applause from the roughly 600 people gathered. Kent said the share split would be the 11th in the 92-year history of the company's stock and the first time the company offered the split since 1996.

Amgen to Acquire Mustafa Nevzat to Tap Growth in Turkey

(AMGN), the world’s largest biotechnology company, agreed to buy closely held Mustafa Nevzat Pharmaceuticals for almost $700 million to expand in Turkey, where economic growth is boosting demand for medicines. Amgen will pay cash to get 95.6 percent of Mustafa Nevzat, or MN Pharmaceuticals as the Istanbul-based generic-drug maker is known, the companies said in a joint statement. The transaction will boost Amgen’s presence in a region that has “large, fast-growing, priority markets,” they said.

Businessman with Ottoman Roots Plans Investment in Turkey

Image Following the world's richest businessman Carlos Slim, another Ottoman descendent is planning to come to Turkey. Brazilian millionaire Joseph Safra, whose ancestors used to trade in Istanbul, has supposedly now set his sights on Turkey. Turkey, which has fast become a highly desirable destination for both European and Asian investors, has now piqued the interest of Latin Americans. After Carlos Slim, the world's richest businessman with a fortune worth 69 billion dollars, another Lebanese-rooted Ottoman descendent is seeking out investments in Turkey.

Turkoglu Fitted for Protective Mask

Image Magic SF Hedo Turkoglu on Tuesday was fitted for a protective mask he will wear if he can return to play in the postseason. Turkoglu underwent surgery to repair fractures to his right cheekbone April 7. The Magic are hoping to have him back in time for the playoffs, which could start for the club either Saturday or Sunday. He did not take part in the contact portion of practice, but shot baskets and worked on some moves with an assistant coach after the Magic's workout on Tuesday.

Senator Teams with Dr. Oz to Crack Down on Designer Drugs

Image Sen. Jeff Klein, D-Bronx, yesterday announced with talk-show host Dr. Mehmet Oz, a cardiothoracic surgeon, that he is sponsoring legislation to ban designer drugs that have been formulated to mimic the effects of Ecstasy, LSD, Ketamine and other controlled substances. They are not regulated under current law and are readily available online.
