American Exchange Students in the Capital of Turkey Compare Turkey and the US

At Bilkent, international faculty and instructors make up more than a quarter of all academic staff, representing 40 different countries. Turkey: 1.4 Million Euro Loan and Equity Stake in Meykar Frozen Drinks Producer

Image The EBRD is making a €1.4 million investment in Meykar, one of Turkey’s leading private manufacturers and distributors of frozen beverages to expand the company’s capacities and product range.

The two-tranche financing is in the form of a convertible loan of €0.7 million that has already been disbursed and a planned €0.7 million equity injection that will come into effect as the company implements its business development plan.

The EBRD’s funds will be used to finance the purchase and installation of new equipment lines. The improvements will increase Meykar’s production capacity and distribution network across Turkey.

“We are very pleased to help Meykar’s management team with this transaction, which underlines our commitment to further develop Turkey’s fast-growing small and medium-sized private business sector. The Bank is an early investor in the company and we will continue providing our support as the company continues its growth,” Michael Davey, EBRD Director for Turkey, said.

Turkey's Economy Grows 11% in First Quarter

Image Turkey's economy grew 11 percent in the first quarter of 2011, Turkish Statistics Institute said on Thursday. The economy had grown 9.2 percent in the last quarter of 2010, and 8.9 percent throughout the previous year, higher than the expectations of the government. Turkey's GDP was up 17.9 percent in current prices and reached 284.8 billion Turkish liras-TL (175.4 billion USD). In constant prices, Turkey's economy grew 11 percent and reached 25.8 billion TL (15.8 billion USD).

Turkish Scientists Discover Gene Causing Progressive Kidney Disease in Kids

Image A group of Turkish scientists have discovered a gene that causes end-stage kidney disease in children.

Dr. Fatih Ozaltin and his team from Ankara's Hacettepe University discovered a "PTPRO" gene which causes end-stage renal failure in children, as part of a project funded by EU'S 6th Framework Program and the Scientific & Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK).

Turkish scientists detected the gene while examining families with a history of first-degree consanguineous (blood-related) marriage.

The study named "Disruption of PTPRO Causes Childhood-Onset Nephrotic Syndrome" has been published in the latest edition of The American Journal of Human Genetics as well.

US-based MetLife Acquires Turkish Insurance Company

Image Denizbank, a Turkish lender largely owned by Europe’s Dexia, has agreed to sell its insurance operations in Turkey for 161.9 million euros to U.S.-based Metlife, a statement from the lender said Monday. According to the agreement on sales of 99.86 percent of stake, Denizbank branches will continue to sell Metlife’s individual retirement and life insurance policies for 15 years.

Turkish Businessman Decorated with Excellent Order of Britain

Image A statement by Koc Holding said on Wednesday that Turkey's Koc Holding Honorary Chairman Rahmi Koc would receive the award at a ceremony to be held this year.

British Embassy said in a statement that Rahmi Koc would be decorated with "Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire" for his great contributions to Turkish-British relations.

ICC Won The Best Corporate Social Responsibility Project

Image Istanbul Chamber of Commerce was awarded ''Best Corporate Social Responsibility Project'' by the World Chambers Federation (WCF), is the only global awards programme to recognize the most innovative projects undertaken by chambers of commerce and industry from around the world.

The World Chambers Competition organized by the World Chambers Federation (WCF). All chambers who submitted applications for the 2011 World Chambers Competition. A record breaking number of 72 applications from 41 countries were received.

WCF's international panel of judges was impressed by the great variety and quality of projects and commented on the difficulty of choosing just five finalists for each category.

Istanbul Chamber of Commerce and Alanya Chamber of Commerce and Industry were finalists for Best Corporate Social Responsibility Project.

More US Tourists Coming to Turkey Thanks to Designer's Ad Campaign

Image An award-winning Turkish visual designer based in Los Angeles has helped increase American tourist numbers to his homeland by 30 percent thanks to a strategic advertising campaign.

“Bringing tourists to Turkey is not only possible by taking the photos of the Maiden’s Tower, Ephesus and Ölüdeniz and advertising them in Times Square and The New York Times,” visual designer Emrah Yücel recently told Anatolia news agency. “A strategy is necessary behind this activity; it is necessary to know American people. We pay attention to give the right message in right times.”

Yücel won a job tendered by the Culture and Tourism Ministry and began a poster campaign earlier this year that used visuals resembling Hollywood movie posters to increase the number of U.S. visitors to Turkey from 100,000 to 130,000 over the previous year, according to official ministry data.

The designer, who has worked in Hollywood for many years, said his promotion team attached great importance to Easter and Thanksgiving, which are very important to Americans, as well as April 23 Children’s Day.

Dow, Aksa of Turkey in Talks to Form Carbon Fiber Joint Venture

Image Dow Chemical Co. (DOW), the largest U.S. chemicals manufacturer, and Aksa Akrilik Kimya Sanayii (AKSA) AS, a Turkish maker of synthetic acrylic fibers, are in talks to form a joint venture to make carbon fiber and derivatives, the companies said.

Dow and Istanbul-based Aksa signed an accord to “examine opportunities to develop and market a broad range of products and technical service offerings in the carbon fiber-based composites industry,” the companies said today in a statement.

The manufacturers will work on products aimed at “increasing the energy capture of wind turbines, improving the fuel economy of automobiles, and extending the life of roads and buildings,” Andrew Liveris, chairman and chief executive officer of Midland, Michigan-based Dow, said in the statement.

Dr. Oz Is Eighth Turk to Grace Cover of Time Magazine

Image Mehmet Oz becomes the eighth Turk to grace the cover of one of the world's most prestigious magazines, Time. The Turkish health guru known as Dr. Oz, who gained fame as the host for on a show on the American TV channel Fox, has become the eighth Turk to grace the cover of one of the world's most prestigious magazines, Time.

Time's cover this week features Dr. Oz examining himself as a patient for an article he wrote about lessons he learned from his own cancer scare.

In the article, Oz tells about his fear of his colon cancer. Built by the 50th day of age during a colon cancer check-up suspicion arose, and then spent by the operation of self, said:

"I am a famous doctor. I give advice to millions of people. I am proud of being a good doctor and a good family man, but in fact I had been a bad patient,” he said.
