The hurricane that struck the gulf coasts of New Orleans and Mississippi has left the same deep marks as the August 17, 1999 earthquake in Izmit. There is a big difference between these two disasters. The earthquake destroyed a big geographic area with a force of 7.4 Richter in the middle of the night.

Contrary to expectations, the 2004 Presidential elections ended without any complications, as the Democratic candidate John Kerry called President Bush to concede the elections. The chaos of 2000 elections did not repeat.

Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, the new Secretary of General of the NATO has officially taken office. The NATO was established during the Cold War era but is increasingly being questioned for its current raison d’etre. Last September, Mr. Schaffer was appointed to replace George Robertson, who retired from the NATO, while he was the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Netherlands. He is the third Dutch Secretary General in the history of NATO.

According to legend, the Sultan of the Kubadabad Dynasty in Anatolia was told by a fortune-teller that the princess he loved would die on her 18th birthday due to a snake bite. The Sultan, intending to protect the girl from snakes, had a tower built in the middle of the Bosporus Strait in Istanbul and safeguarded her there.

The Plymouth Colony, which was made up of some of the first settlers of the present day USA, celebrated the bounty of their harvest following a hard winter, and later turned this into an occasion to thank God for all that He gave them.
