The NATO was established during the Cold War era but is increasingly being questioned for its current raison d’etre. Last September, Mr. Schaffer was appointed to replace George Robertson, who retired from the NATO, while he was the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Netherlands. He is the third Dutch Secretary General in the history of NATO.

According to legend, the Sultan of the Kubadabad Dynasty in Anatolia was told by a fortune-teller that the princess he loved would die on her 18th birthday due to a snake bite. The Sultan, intending to protect the girl from snakes, had a tower built in the middle of the Bosporus Strait in Istanbul and safeguarded her there.

The vote of 600 thousand Turks in Germany in the last elections has been a serious determining factor for the race between Angela Merkel and Gerhard Schröder. Had the Turkish voters not have supported Schröder, the outcome could have been different for Merkel, who won the race by a narrow margin.
