Three long time Turkish American activists  have been awarded  TURYAK  Exemplary Senior Citizen Award. TURYAK stands  Turk  Yaslilik Konseyi  which translates into Turkish Senior Citizens Council. Established in 2003, TURYAK is a member of International Federation on Aging. TURYAK gives awards to outstanding senior citizens  in Turkey and also in U.S., Germany, England and Australia where there is sizable Turkish immigrant presence. Oya Bain TASC Secretary General, is a retired biochemist  who held leadership positions in  clinical pathology laboratories. She retired from Georgetown University Hospital as the technical director of the Clinical Pathology Department of Laboratory Medicine.

WASHINGTON — The United States imposed sanctions on Thursday against a Turkish company and two of its officers for doing business with North Korea, sending a tough signal to Pyongyang ahead of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s expected visit there this weekend. The Treasury Department accused S.I.A. Falcon International Group of being involved in trading weapons and luxury goods with North Korea, defying sanctions imposed by both the United States and the United Nations. “The international community must not stand idly by as U.N. sanctions are being circumvented,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a press statement.

Actual walls made of brick or stone, such as the one President Trump would like to build between the U.S. and Mexico, are built as physical borders to protect a large-group identity psychologically, a professor said Wednesday. “So America, the great, will be psychologically protected,” said  Dr. Vamik Volkan, emeritus professor of Psychiatry at UVa. Volkan, author of more than 50 books and a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, spoke Wednesday night at Waynesboro Public Library on "The Psychology of Immigrants and Refugees.” Sherry Von Oeyen of Staunton, who attended with her husband Bob,  said she felt she learned something from Volkan’s talk about immigrants and refugees, and she does not want the U.S. to build walls.

A jury found Friend Rizkkhalil, 51, of Atlantic Beach, guilty on three counts of grand theft involving three woman and more than $100,000. Rizkkhalil now faces up to 35 years in a Florida state prison. A sentencing hearing is scheduled before Judge Mark Borello the week of Nov. 13. Each count represents a different victim of Rizkkhalil’s crimes. From October 2016 to Jun 2017, Rizkkhalil posed as a Turkish businessman named Murat Karanan as he conned a female victim out of approximately $8,400. He did so by convincing her to invest in an import-export business that did not actually exist.
