By Noah Smith - A little more than a week ago, Stanford University mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani died at 40 after a battle with breast cancer. In that short lifetime, she accomplished more than most of us ever will. Mirzakhani was one of the world's greatest mathematicians — a recipient of the Fields Medal, mathematics' highest honor. Her career was a triumph for the U.S. university system and American scientific prowess. But Mirzakhani was born and raised in Iran. She is living proof of the advantage immigration gives the United States.

As part of TCA's Turkish American Women's Leadership Initiative, last weekend a delegation of five Turkish American women joined members of Congress and industry representatives at the Congressional Black Caucus PAC's (CBC) Annual Retreat in New York City from July 21-23, 2017. Nineteen Congressional Black Caucus members took part in the retreat as well as special guests House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD/5th) and Reps. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY/10th), Filemon Vela (D-TX/34th), and Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX/15th). Representatives from 75 companies and organizations also took part in the retreat.

Just over 30 years ago, I emigrated from Turkey to continue my post-graduate degrees at Lehigh University to pursue my American dream. As Secretary Rex Tillerson visited my birth country two weeks ago, I reflect on just how far the U.S.-Turkey relationship has come in the last three decades. The exponential trade growth between our two countries, driven by numerous "commercial diplomats" like myself, deserves greater reflection on the anniversary of the darkest chapter in Turkey's recent history — the failed coup on July 15, 2016.
