Turkish American Communities Welcome Israeli Apology

Image The Turkish American leadership expresses its sincere commendations for the forthright action of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, who apologized to the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan for a mishandled Israeli military operation that resulted in the deaths of nine Turkish civilians, including a Turkish American, on a cruise ship, Mavi Marmara, in the eastern Mediterranean.  The ship was heading for Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid.  We had called upon Turks to reserve judgement, neither condemning nor condoning Israel, and calling upon a multilateral commission of inquiry.  Please see ATAA Release.

According to an Israeli government statement:

"The prime minister made it clear that the tragic results regarding the Mavi Marmara were unintentional and that Israel expresses regret over injuries and loss of life.

"In light of the Israeli investigation into the incident, which pointed out several operational errors, Prime Minister Netanyahu apologized to the Turkish people for any errors that could have led to loss of life and agreed to complete the agreement on compensation."

Prime Minister Erdogan accepted the Israeli apology on behalf of the Turkish nation, and dropped all charges against the Israeli military.

Furthermore, we are thankful to President Barack Obama who recently visited Israel and played a major role in orchestrating the phone call, which took place while he was still at the airport with Prime Minister Netanyahu.

Hayırlı Olsun !   (Good Luck & Congratulations!)
