Yusuf Simsekyilmaz, who owns Diamond of Sofia in the town of Englewood, New Jersey, has allegedly disappeared along with jewelry, watches, and valuable accessories worth an estimated $6-7 million. The shop, which opened in March 2024, was reportedly closed by Simsekyilmaz on Saturday, September 28, after he collected jewelry from the market, promising an extensive sale. He vanished after closing the shop that day, along with his girlfriend.
It was reported that jewelry suppliers alerted the FBI after realizing what had happened, leading to an ongoing investigation. While there are claims that Simsekyilmaz fled to Turkey, questions have arisen regarding how he managed to accumulate a jewelry inventory worth $6-7 million in just six months. The investigation is ongoing, with creditors who sold jewelry to Simsekyilmaz owed amounts ranging from $1.1 million to $200,000.
Simsekyilmaz made a name for himself by taking over one of New Jersey’s oldest Turkish restaurants befor transferring ownership a short time later. In early 2024, he left the restaurant business to enter the jewelry sector. Before coming to the U.S., Simsekyilmaz had worked in casinos in Cyprus and claimed to have secured his initial business capital in America by selling inherited land in Adana, Turkey.
