Turkey: Continued Growth in 2013?

Image By Alanna Petroff - Turkish equity markets have seen phenomenal growth in 2012, with the benchmark Istanbul Stock Exchange National 100 Index rising by 50% since the start of the year. The best-performing funds of 2012 were all Turkey-centric, with the HSBC Global Investment Funds Turkey Equity fund shooting up by over 65% since the start of 2012. Other Turkey-focused funds include the UBAM Turkish Equity fund and the Charlemagne Magna Turkey fund. Both of these funds have returned more than 50% to investors since January 2012.

Obama Named TIME Magazine's Person of Year

Image TIME has tapped US President Barack Obama for its Person of the Year for the second time, citing his historic re-election last month as symbolic of the nation's shifting demographics and the rise of younger, more diverse Americans. In announcing its annual selection on Wednesday, the magazine called Obama the "Architect of the New America." "He's basically the beneficiary and the author of a kind new America - a new demographic, a new cultural America that he is now the symbol of," TIME editor Rick Stengel said of Obama, who was also selected for the honor in 2008 when he became the nation's first black president.     

Turkish-American to Lead Washington Masonic Lodge

Image The son of a Turkish lobbyist in Washington was elected as the next leader of Potomac Lodge No. 5, a Masonic lodge in Georgetown, several Turkish newspapers reported on Wednesday. Çetin Durak, who is 28 years old, took over the post earlier this week. A report published in the Hürriyet daily said Durak, a University of Virginia graduate, was introduced to the lodge by masons who praised him as a “young, career oriented person with good morals, whose values are in line with Masonic values.”
