European Turkey: Diversity in Unity

Anatolia, from the pre-historic period until the present time, evolved into an area enriched with a cultural legacy inherited from many different civilizations. This cultural heritage has been preserved until the present time, making good use of shared experiences and utilizing what had been learned or accumulated. In this way, Anatolia has served not only as a geographic bridge, connecting Asia to Europe or the East to the West, but also as a perception linking the past with the present and introducing Eastern thought to the Western way of thinking.

My Grandparents Were Always Proud of their Turkish Heritage

Until a century ago in Kırklareli, the capital of Kırklareli Province in Eastern Thrace, in the European part of Turkey, there was a Jewish congregation of one thousand three hundred people. Now among the native-born residents of the city there are only five Jews, including the rabbi. Rabbi Hayim Abravanel (86) has served over 50 years in the Musa Synagogue Foundation.

Whenever Turkey-US relations are being examined, trade affairs and economic dimension are shadowed by defense and politics-oriented relations between the two countries.  Naturally, this was one of the matters discussed during US President Barack Obama’s recent visit to our country.  As a result of the dialogues with President Obama, the obligation of supporting strategic relations between the two countries through advancements in trade and economic relations has been agreed on.

Will Buffalo Rise Once Again?

The village of Buffalo was originally surveyed and laid out for the Holland Land Company in 1804 by Joseph Ellicott. The Holland Land Company had purchased western New York, bounded by the Genessee River to the east, Lake Ontario to the North, the Niagara River and Lake Erie to the west and Pennsylvania to the south. Buffalo of 1830's was a boom town on the Erie Canal.

During 2007, 650,000 American tourists visited Turkey. This is the highest number ever recorded. In recent years, the number of tourists visiting Turkey has increased at a rate that is almost three times the world average, with 23.3 million people visiting Turkey in 2007. In 2006, there were 19 million, while in 2005, 21 million visited Turkey.

Curious About Turkish-Born Grandfather

Congressman Steve Cohen has been looking for an answer for a long time. Up to now he hasn’t found the answer yet. His mother’s birth certificate states that his grandfather was born in Turkey. Though he contacted the Turkish consulate in Houston, he hasn’t been able to find out more information. His mother was born in 1915 and Mr. Cohen doesn’t even have any idea which city his grandfather was born in but he is still searching...
