TCA Announces 4th Annual Turkish American Youth Leadership Congress

This month, TCA opened applications for the Fourth Annual Turkish American Turkish American Youth Leadership Congress. The Congress will take place October 26-29, 2017 in Washington, D.C., and will provide selected individuals the opportunity to experience Washington, D.C. and connect with their peers and heritage while learning about civic engagement, political activism, leadership, and the U.S.-Turkey relationship. TCA will select up to 25 young Turkish Americans to participate in this exclusive, all-expenses-paid forum. Applications for the 2017 Turkish American Youth Leadership Congress are due Monday, September 11, 2016.

Turkish American Dr. Asu Ozdaglar Named Associate Department Head at MIT

Turkish American Dr. Asu Ozdaglar, the Joseph F. and Nancy P. Keithley Professor of Engineer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), was recently promoted to both Associate and Interim Department Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS). She is best known for her contributions in the areas of optimization theory, economic and social networked systems, and game theory.

In that short lifetime, she accomplished more than most of us ever will. Mirzakhani was one of the world's greatest mathematicians — a recipient of the Fields Medal, mathematics' highest honor. Her career was a triumph for the U.S. university system and American scientific prowess. But Mirzakhani was born and raised in Iran. She is living proof of the advantage immigration gives the United States.

Istanbul-based Architecture Firm Opens First NYC Office

Istanbul-based Tabanlioğlu Architects has set up shop in Lower Manhattan with its first ever office in New York City. The firm, led by Murat Tabanlioğlu, announced on Monday that it’s opening a new office at 111 John Street. The firm, which has offices in Dubai, Doha and London, was founded in 1990 by Tabanlioğlu and his father, Hayati Tabanlıoğlu. Downtown Manhattan has attracted a number of major architecture firms over the years. SHoP Architects; Skidmore, Owings & Merrill; and Hill West, formerly Goldstein Hill & West, all have offices Downtown. Tabanlioğlu’s new John Street office space — 3,000 square feet on the 26th floor — coincides with the firm’s push to expand its work in New York and the United States.

‘The Dr. Oz Show’ Library Acquired by Z Living Network

Health entertainment cable network Z Living has acquired “The Dr. Oz Show’s” library and will begin airing episodes from multiple seasons as part of its regular programming, Variety has learned. “Z Living has made record-breaking strides in original programming this year, while concurrently amping up our roster of prestigious health entertainment content from many of the industry’s top producers,” said Z Living general manager Rafe Oller. “We’re honored to have ‘Dr. Oz’ on our air, and feel the fit and draw for our audience could not be more ideal.”

Why you should know her: Turkish filmmaker Burcu Koray, a current fellow at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA), is participating in a new performance series at Second Stage Amherst, in conjunction with VCCA. The boundless imagination of Turkish filmmaker Burcu (pronounced Brr-jus) Koray never ceases in its creative activity. From her site-specific, interactive film installations to her screenplays and even her current novel-in-progress, Koray is always envisioning her next artistic endeavor.
