Symantec Sells SSL Business to DigiCert for $950M in Cash and 30% Shares

In the face of devastating penalties prepared by Google, Symantec announced plans to sell its SSL issuance certificate business to rival company DigiCert. The price of the acquisition is $950 million in upfront cash and a 30 percent stake in DigiCert stock at the closing of the transaction. At the time of writing, Symantec was the third largest SSL provider on the market after Comodo and IdenTrust, with a market share of 14% and SSL certificates running on 5.5% of the Internet's domains. DigiCert is ranked sixth with a 2.2% market share and certificates on 0.9% of the Internet's sites. On the other hand, DigiCert has a bigger presence in the IoT market, where its SSL certs are often used to encrypt traffic between smart devices and vendor servers.

Tech has already conquered the stock market and the realm of digital advertising. Now the technology sector also has a strangle hold on another measure: the value of consumer brands. The massive scale and reach of tech companies has helped their brand values to skyrocket over the last decade. In fact, even just adding Google and Apple’s most recent numbers together gives a figure that rivals the GDP of Sweden.

Apple Aims to Get an iPad in the Hands of Every Hospital Patient

Apple has made great strides in health in the last few years and if it gets its way, there will be an iPad in the hands of every hospital patient. It’s already started with a smattering of hospitals around the U.S. including Jacobs Medical Center at UC San Diego, MetroSouth Medical Center in Chicago and about a year ago at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles. Earlier this week, I went down to L.A. to take a tour of Cedars-Sinai‘s pilot program allowing patients direct access to their vitals, care team and educational tools through iPads.

Zeus Malware Found with Valid Digital Certificate

Security vendor Comodo reported Thursday finding the variant 200 times while monitoring and analyzing data from users of its Internet security system. The variant includes the digital signature, a rootkit and a data-stealing malware component. "Malware with a valid digital signature is an extremely dangerous situation," the company said in a blog post.

BlackBerry in Africa, Amazon in Turkey

Image Would you like to get your hands on a new BlackBerry (BBRY -2.89%) Z10 smartphone before it goes on sale in the U.S. on March 22? Try South Africa. It's been on the shelves there since March 1. This is not to suggest that South Africa is a more important market than the U.S. Obviously, with a population of about 50 million -- compared to more than 300 million here -- it's not. But at least South Africans can say they've been loyal to the BlackBerry brand: It still holds a 50% share of the smartphone market there, years after it fell off the radar screens of U.S. consumers.

Turkish High Schools Teams Participating in the First Robotics Competition Regionals

ATAA Trustee Davut Okutcu visited the Turkish teams competing at the New York regionals at the Javitz arena. "The varsity Sport for the Mind," FRC combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of 25 students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It's as close to "real-world engineering" as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team.
