In that short lifetime, she accomplished more than most of us ever will. Mirzakhani was one of the world's greatest mathematicians — a recipient of the Fields Medal, mathematics' highest honor. Her career was a triumph for the U.S. university system and American scientific prowess. But Mirzakhani was born and raised in Iran. She is living proof of the advantage immigration gives the United States.

Turkish American Woman Attend Congressional Black Caucus New York Retreat

As part of TCA's Turkish American Women's Leadership Initiative, last weekend a delegation of five Turkish American women joined members of Congress and industry representatives at the Congressional Black Caucus PAC's (CBC) Annual Retreat in New York City from July 21-23, 2017. Nineteen Congressional Black Caucus members took part in the retreat as well as special guests House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD/5th) and Reps. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY/10th), Filemon Vela (D-TX/34th), and Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX/15th). Representatives from 75 companies and organizations also took part in the retreat.

Just over 30 years ago, I emigrated from Turkey to continue my post-graduate degrees at Lehigh University to pursue my American dream. As Secretary Rex Tillerson visited my birth country two weeks ago, I reflect on just how far the U.S.-Turkey relationship has come in the last three decades. The exponential trade growth between our two countries, driven by numerous "commercial diplomats" like myself, deserves greater reflection on the anniversary of the darkest chapter in Turkey's recent history — the failed coup on July 15, 2016.

Flying to more countries and also international destinations than any other airline in the world, Turkish Airlines has started to operate four weekly flights to Phuket as from 17th July. The inaugural flight from Istanbul landed at 8.55am in the Phuket International Airport (HKT) and was welcomed by the customary water cannon salutes in a formal ceremony. Istanbul-based Tabanlioğlu Architects has set up shop in Lower Manhattan with its first ever office in New York City. The firm, led by Murat Tabanlioğlu, announced on Monday that it’s opening a new office at 111 John Street. The firm, which has offices in Dubai, Doha and London, was founded in 1990 by Tabanlioğlu and his father, Hayati Tabanlıoğlu. Downtown Manhattan has attracted a number of major architecture firms over the years. SHoP Architects; Skidmore, Owings & Merrill; and Hill West, formerly Goldstein Hill & West, all have offices Downtown. Tabanlioğlu’s new John Street office space — 3,000 square feet on the 26th floor — coincides with the firm’s push to expand its work in New York and the United States.

Turkish Big Man Ersan Ilyasova Signs on with the Atlanta Hawks

Washington (AFP) - Turkish forward Ersan Ilyasova and American centre Dewayne Dedmon have signed National Basketball Association (NBA) contracts with the Atlanta Hawks, the team announced on Friday in moves to bolster their front court. Dedmon's deal was reportedly for US$14 million (S$19 million) over two years with Ilyasova getting US$6 million for one season. Ilyasova, set to begin his 10th NBA season, has career averages of 11.0 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.2 assists over 609 games for the Milwaukee Bucks, Detroit Pistons, Orlando Magic, Oklahoma City Thunder, Philadelphia 76ers and Hawks. The 30-year-old second-round pick in the 2005 NBA Draft is a 44 per cent shooter, hitting 36.6 per cent from 3-point range.

Aegean Sea Earthquake Rocks Greece, Turkey Resorts: Two Dead on Kos

Two people were killed and at least 100 injured after a magnitude-6.7 earthquake rocked popular Greek and Turkish tourist destinations on the Aegean Sea early Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey and officials said. The earthquake sent tourists and locals running into the streets on the Greek island of Kos and the Turkish port city of Bodrum shortly after 1.30 a.m. (6.30 p.m. Thursday ET), according to the Associated Press. Both destinations are popular with European vacationers during the summer high-season.
