Sierra Nevada Corporation CEO Invited to Join National Space Council Users’ Advisory Group

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., February 21, 2018 – Fatih Ozmen, Sierra Nevada Corporation CEOAt the second gathering of the National Space Council at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) CEO Fatih Ozmen is among leaders of the nation’s top aerospace and defense companies invited to join the Council’s Users’ Advisory Group. SNC is best known publicly for the company’s Dream Chaser® spacecraft – nicknamed “America’s spaceplane” – and is under contract with NASA to service the International Space Station (ISS) starting in 2020. Dream Chaser is a reusable space utility vehicle capable of transportation and other missions in low-Earth orbit, and the only commercial, lifting-body vehicle capable of a runway landing. Dream Chaser successfully completed a free flight test in November at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center (see video here).

Irvin Receives $100,000 Donation from Chobani

CONCORD- W.M. Irvin Elementary students and staff were shocked when Ellen DeGeneres announced that the Chobani Foundation was donating $100,000 to the school for its BackPack program.
Emily Francis, English as a Second Language teacher at W.M. Irvin, traveled to California last week to be on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Francis was selected as a guest because of her kindness and dedication to her students. A former Cabarrus County Schools Teacher of the Year, Francis moved from Guatemala to the United States when she was 15 and told Ellen she learned English by watching her on television.

Turkish FM Signals Citizenship to be Granted to All Ottoman Dynasty Members

Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu signaled on Feb. 11 that Turkish citizenship will be provided to all overseas members of the Ottoman dynasty at a meeting in Istanbul, one day after events held to mark the centenary of the death of Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamid II. “We want to provide citizenship to all those who do not have Turkish citizenship. I will personally deal with this issue in accordance with decisions from the cabinet,” he said. Çavuşoğlu and Istanbul Mayor Mevlüt Uysal met members of the Ottoman royal family who were in Istanbul to attend Abdulhamid II memorial events.

Runners Climb Empire State Presented by Turkish Airlines

Approximately 250 runners from around the world climbed the Empire State Building Run-Up presented by Turkish Airlines and powered by the Challenged Athletes Foundation. In the world’s first and most famous tower race, runners climbed 1,576 stairs, 1,050 vertical feet (320 meters), to the 86th floor of the fifth tallest building in the U.S. for the 41st annual event on Wednesday. Frank Nicolas Carreno Hernandez from Colombia won the men’s invitational with 10 minutes and 50 seconds in his first participation in the Run-Up, The defending champion Suzy Walsham from Singapore won the women’s invitational with 12 minutes and 56 seconds. This was Walsham’s ninth total victory in the race, and her sixth consecutive win.

Sierra Nevada's Minishuttle Is Go for Space Station Supply Deliveries in 2020

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - The International Space Station will have a new spacecraft visitor starting in 2020 now that Sierra Nevada has received NASA approval to send its Dream Chaser cargo carrier to the orbiting laboratory. The Nevada-based commercial space company said Wednesday that it has the go-ahead from NASA to finalize the spacecraft, which looks like a mini space shuttle, for cargo resupply missions beginning in late 2020. “SNC has been successfully completing critical design milestones as approved by NASA, and having a timetable for the first launch is another important step achieved for us,” Sierra Nevada Corp. CEO Fatih Ozmen said. “The team has worked so hard to get to this point and we can’t wait to fulfill this mission for NASA.”

Yildiz Asks Banks for Biggest Ever Turkish Loan

Yildiz Holding, owner of companies including Godiva Chocolates and United Biscuits, requested the largest loan ever from Turkish banks, citing difficulties with an existing finance structure that requires it to make monthly loan repayments that can reach more than $1 billion. In a letter to 10 banks dated Jan. 29, Yildiz asked them to create a consortium, syndication or joint finance group to consolidate their loans to Yildiz. The letter, which was viewed by Bloomberg and verified by two people with direct knowledge of its contents, was signed by Yildiz Holding Chief Financial Officer Mustafa Tercan and Ali Ulker, deputy chairman of the board.
