Turkish, US Diplomats Work to Ease Troubled Ties

Diplomats from the United States and Turkey are working to ease tensions after disputes led the countries to place visa restrictions on each other. This past weekend, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made sharply critical remarks about the U.S. over a diplomatic dispute from the summer. Erdogan was angry that the U.S. had given arrest orders for Turkish security officials in August. He said, “If the United States issues arrest warrants for my 13 bodyguards in a country where I went upon invitation, I am sorry, but I will not say that country is civilized.”

Inaugural Hollywood Turkish Film Festival Held on October 20

LOS ANGELES (October 23, 2017) – The inaugural Hollywood Turkish Film Festival (HTFF), sponsored by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate of Cinema and Turkish Airlines was held from October 20-22, 2017 in Los Angeles’ Paramount Pictures Studios with a special viewing of the critically acclaimed Turkish film Ayla. The best of Turkish cinema was showcased in a three-day program, bringing together filmmakers, actors, cinema enthusiasts, critics and industry influencers. The film festival aimed to recognize the diversity, significance and contributions of the Turkish film community.

Chobani Donates Yogurt to California Fire Victims

TWIN FALLS, Idaho Tuesday night employees at Chobani's Twin Falls plant loaded up a refrigerated truck with yogurt products. The yogurt is headed to California to be handed out to victims and first responders of the California wildfires. According to the company, tens of thousands of products will be delivered to locations in Santa Rosa and Napa this week. “Along with the rest of the country, we’re heartbroken by the loss of life and devastation resulting from the wildfires in Northern California, but we know how resilient this community is,” said Tim Brown, Chobani President & COO. - http://www.kmvt.com

The Kurdish Referendum Started to Destabilize The Region More

By Ali Cinar - There’s a reason why Turkey, the United States, the United Nations and many western countries were against the Kurdish referendum that has been proposed on Kurdish independence. The answer is because it was bad idea that would cause chaos rather than peace and bring regional instability to the region, at a time when the world at large and the countries in the region are facing problems and tough choices with the situations in Syria as well as Iraq.

Being Muslim in the NBA

According to the Pew Research Center, by 2020 the United States is expected to have a population that is 78.3 percent Christian and a mere 0.9 percent Muslim. As the NBA season opens Tuesday night, at least 12 of its returning players are Muslim: Kanter, Denver Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried, Minnesota Timberwolves center Gorgui Dieng, Miami Heat guard Dion Waiters, Portland Trail Blazers forward Al-Farouq Aminu and center Jusuf Nurkic, New Orleans Pelicans center Omer Asik, Atlanta Hawks forward Ersan Ilyasova and guard Dennis Schroder, Dallas Mavericks center Salah Mejri, Milwaukee Bucks forward Mirza Teletovic and Brooklyn Nets forward Rondae-Hollis Jefferson, according to the online magazine Muslim Matters and other media outlets.

Turkish, U.S. Officials Plan Meeting to Resolve Visa Feud

U.S. and Turkish officials will meet in the coming days to try to defuse a diplomatic crisis over Turkey’s arrest of some U.S. citizens and local consular workers, Turkey’s Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag said. “Turkey-U.S. relations have passed numerous tests, and we can overcome such crises,” Bozdag said in an interview with Haberturk television on Thursday. U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary Jonathan R. Cohen, who’s in charge of European and Eurasian affairs, is expected to head the U.S. delegation to Turkey next week, NTV television said on its website, citing unidentified U.S. State Department officials. Bozdag’s comments came after Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told his Turkish counterpart of the Trump administration’s “profound concern” about the detentions.

Citigroup Inc. acquired a new position in shares of TURKISH INVT FD (NYSE:TKF) in the 2nd quarter, according to the company in its most recent Form 13F filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The institutional investor acquired 65,882 shares of the financial services provider’s stock, valued at approximately $632,000.

US Delegation To Travel To Turkey Amid Visa Crisis

A US delegation from the State Department will travel to Turkey next week to discuss the ongoing crisis between the nations involving the arrest of US consulate employees and the suspension of visa services. Turkish government spokesman Bekir Bozdag told Haberturk television on Thursday that the two sides have agreed to work together on the crisis and that representatives will meet. Broadcaster NTV and other local media said Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Jonathan Cohen will lead the US delegation.
