US Election Seen from Turkey: Turkish People Have "A Very Negative Perception of Joe Biden"

İpek Yezdani is an international freelance journalist based in Turkey. Our conversation has been edited for length and clarity.Carlos Santamaria: In your opinion, what are two or three issues that people in Turkey are concerned about regarding the upcoming US election?

IY: There are several very important critical issues for Turkey-US relations. One of them is, of course, Syria. During the Obama administration, there was huge support for the Kurdish YPG forces in Syria. During the Trump administration, this support has continued for a while. The Turkish government considers the YPG as a terrorist organization, but on the other hand, Turkey is an ally, a NATO ally, maybe one of the strongest US allies in the Middle East. We has been fighting against this terrorist organization for decades, so this is a very important issue for Turkey.

Two survey vessels sent out to the Mediterranean gets a reaction from Greece and Southern Cyprus. France supports Greece upon the responses.

European Union will put the matter on its agenda at the meeting to be held on September 24th.

In addition, Secretary Pompeo underlined that they know not all of the Russian vessels which stop at the Southern Cypriot ports carry out humane activities in Syria.

At the end of the visit, it was determined to establish a "Cypriot Land, High Sea and Port Security Center" between the U.S. and Greek Cypriot region.

The reaction from  TRNC:

The Presidency of TRNC reacted to the U.S Secretary of State, Pompeo, who was said to meet only Greek officials during his visit to Cyprus, stating, "It is not possible to accept such an attitude."

Turkish Defence Minister Akar arrived in the TRNC to monitor the "Distinguished Observer Day" activities of "Mediterranean Storm-2020 Drill".

During his visit, Hulusi Akar said: "We have done everything under good neighborhood relations, and we will keep on to do so. We expect the same from the other party. Hence, as long as our demands and requests on this are met, we seek peace."

Regarding the recent developments, retired Admiral Cihat Yaycı also indicated that the Greek President's visit to Meis and surrounding Turkish islands is unacceptable and that "this is a major diplomatic opportunity to justify our position to the rest of the world."

Secretary Pompeo; United States demands 'snapback' of measures at UNSC

The U.S will activate the "snapback" mechanism that has recently brought up to the international agenda, to unilaterally re-implement the expired sanctions against Iran.

The Trump administration, having withdrawn in 2018 from the international agreement that covered Iran's nuclear program, has no backing from UN Members in their  "snapback" move.

Following lengthy negotiations, Germany, along with the permanent members of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, the United States, China, Russia, France, and Britain, had signed a historic agreement with Iran in 2015 on its nuclear program.

In the agreement, it was decided that the UN would lift international sanctions against Iran in return for the Tehran government's promise not to manufacture nuclear weapons.

According to the agreement, the conventional arms embargo on Iran will expire on October 18, officially named as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, and entered into force with the UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

After failing to convince the UN Security Council members about prolonging the agreement, the Trump administration brought the "snap back mechanism into the light to try their chances again.

During his presidency, President Barack Obama included the "snapback" mechanism in the agreement to re-enforce all of the previous sanctions in case of Iran violating its provisions.

Unlike other UN Security Council resolutions, this mechanism does not entitle the five permanent members the right of veto.

Resolution 2231 also gives any signatory country of the agreement the right to make a complaint that another treaty participant violated the rules. The use of this right by a state starts a 30-day process for the Security Council to create a new decision that will altogether remove all sanctions in force under the agreement.

U.S.  also took the official step to start this process. According to the agreement, the country receiving the said step has the right to veto the new decision to be taken by the Security Council within 30 days. Therefore, the right to reintroduce all sanctions under the current conditions.

Secretary Pompeo’s Remarks at United Nations:

“I notified them that the United States is initiating the restoration of virtually all UN sanctions on Iran lifted under UN Security Council Resolution 2231.  This process will lead to those sanctions coming back into effect 30 days from today. Our message is very, very simple: the United States will never allow the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism to freely buy and sell planes, tanks, missiles, and other kinds of conventional weapons.  These UN sanctions will continue the arms embargo.”

“Our actions today too should come as no surprise to anyone.  Our team has made every diplomatic effort over now almost two years to renew this arms embargo.  I want to thank the Dominican Republic for standing with us in this effort.

“Our friends in Germany, France, and the United Kingdom – the E3 – all told me privately that they don’t want the arms embargo lifted either. We call on the international community to join us in crafting a stronger deal that addresses the full range of Iran’s malign behavior, and protects people of all nations that simply want to live free from Iranian predation. “

NYC Mayor Blasio: "Planning to Lay Off 22,000 Public Workers on Oct 1st"

NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city was moving forward with "painfully real" plans to lay off 22,000 public workers on October 1 unless another source of cash comes through.

"The overwhelming cost of local government is the staff. Where we put our money is to provide services to New Yorkers, whether they're first responders, health care workers, sanitation workers, educators, you name it. "

"If you're going to keep cutting and cutting, it has to at some come to the staff. It's just pure logic of budgets, and it's a very sad logic. I don't like it one bit, and I want to avert this at all costs. The number 22,000 is painfully real," he said.

"Every single agency will experience cuts, every single agency will have to save a lot of money, and generally it will be through layoffs."

President Trump: Reopening of Schools May Need to be Delayed in Hot-spot Areas of Pandemic

President Trump hold a press conference that reopening schools in areas where the pandemic is intense might be delayed by several weeks, but he indicated his desire to reopen schools in fall for other areas and for students to return to study in the classroom.

President Trump also reminded that children are less affected by the pandemic compared to adults and cited a report by the American Academy of Pediatrics stating the fact that schools remaining closed delays the detection of learning disorders, sexual harassment and drug use and that children in low-income families need the food served in schools. President Trump also shared data showing that the negative effect of keeping schools closed impacts African-Americans and low income earners more.

President stated that , if the schools are not reopened, the resources can be provided to parents who send their children to public schools, private schools, charter schools, religious schools or have them home-schooled, saying, "All families will be supported so that they can do the right thing on their own terms."

The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has advised that schools closed due to the novel coronavirus could be reopened in the new academic year.  It was stated that “the best available evidence suggests that Covid-19 poses a relatively low risk for school-age children,” noting that children will probably not show severe symptoms and not spread the virus in schools.

CDC Director Robert Redfield shared his opinion: “The closure of schools has disrupted the lives of families and children and has adverse effects on young people.” He noted that the opening of schools is critical to public health.
