More than 500 guests from fifty countries attended the Atlantic Council’s 9th annual Global Citizen Awards dinner in New York City on September 24. The award was presented to Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg; Argentine President Mauricio Macri; Hamdi Ulukaya, founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Chobani; and the late Arizona Republican Sen. John S. McCain. Frederick Kempe, president and chief executive officer of the Atlantic Council, said the Global Citizen Award was launched with three goals in mind. “First, we wanted to identify individuals who represent the sort of leadership and engagement we thought defined global citizenship at its best. Second, we hope that by recognizing these individuals, we could inspire a host of others. And finally, we wanted to underscore a pretty dramatic shift at the Atlantic Council, our own expanded global mission of galvanizing more effective efforts among friends and allies, certainly at our transatlantic core, but also globally, to secure the future at a time when we had anticipated would be a moment or an era of historic challenge,” he said.

Dr. Oz Recounts His Visits to Syrian Refugee Camps

By Faruk Zorlu, AA - ANKARA - Turkish-American surgeon and talk show host Dr. Mehmet Oz said he was greatly moved by his visits in July to refugee camps in Turkey and Syria, noting it was something he would never forget. "I had the opportunity to visit Syrian refugee camps along the Syria-Turkey border with the help of [Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority] AFAD and [the Turkish Red Crescent] Kizilay. "Despite the hardships the people we met have endured, their stories of resilience are inspiring - this is a trip that has forever changed me," Oz said Monday in a post on his Twitter account. Oz -- who is widely known for his television program The Dr. Oz Show, which has won several Daytime Emmy Awards -- visited refugee camps in Turkey's southeastern Gaziantep province and Syria's northwestern Azaz region in July.

Chobani Announces Food Incubator Participants

Tea, hummus and allergen-free baking ingredients are among the products developed by the startups chosen to be part of the fall Chobani Incubator program for food and beverage entrepreneurs. The company also will mentor two food tech companies in its inaugural tech residency program. Since 2016, the Chobani Incubator program has helped entrepreneurs that are “disrupting and improving high-potential food categories,” the company said in a statement. Alumni have also launched over 30 new SKUs and several have achieved successful rebrands, the company said.

It's approximately the price of six of Boeing's workhorse 737s or, for the more militarily inclined, about the cost of seven F-35 stealth fighter jets. It's also the amount of money NASA and the Sierra Nevada Corp. spent developing the Dream Chaser, a reusable spacecraft designed to take astronauts into orbit. Sierra Nevada, which is based in Sparks, Nevada, and 100% owned by Eren Ozmen and her husband, Fatih, put in $300 million; NASA ponied up the other $350 million. The Dream Chaser's first free flight was in October 2013 when it was dropped 12,500 feet from a helicopter. The landing gear malfunctioned, and the vehicle skidded off the runway upon landing. A year later, NASA passed on Sierra Nevada's space plane and awarded the multibillion-dollar contracts to Boeing and SpaceX.

Cano Ozgener, Founder of OZ Arts and CAO Cigars Dies

Cano Ozgener, a successful cigar entrepreneur and founder of contemporary arts center OZ Arts Nashville, died over the weekend. He was 81. The center announced Ozgener's death on its website Monday. According to the post, Ozgener passed away "peacefully at home … surrounded by family," following a "a long battle with cancer." Okan Group unveiled the project at an event at its 3,000-square-foot sales gallery in Istanbul on Wednesday, Daniel de la Vega of One Sotheby’s International Realty said. “We felt it would be most strategic to start there,” he added.

Because we lived close to each other in Manhattan we had frequent visits and long conversations over coffee and croissants. He also took me to many Turkish restaurants as Turkish food was one of his passions. He enjoyed eating and cooking his favorite dishes that were served in his childhood homes during his exile in France and Portugal.
