Changing Face of Islam in Germany: Turkish Groups No Longer A Majority

People of Turkish origin no longer make up the majority of Muslims in Germany, a major new report found. The survey of Islamic life in Germany, last carried out in 2016, showed migrants from the Middle East putting their stamp on Germany’s population – one in six of the country’s Muslims now have roots in Syria, Iraq or Lebanon. There are now between 5.3 and 5.6 million Muslims living in Germany, from a population of 83.1 million. The study played down fears of a “parallel society” raised by migrant-sceptic politicians. It found that nearly half of Muslims are German citizens, and most have close friends without any migrant background. More than 80 per cent of Muslims in Germany said they were religious, the study found, but their level of integration hardly differed from other migrant groups.

IS Leader Baghdadi Arrived at Area of U.S. Raid 48 Hours Beforehand : Turkish Official

ANKARA (Reuters) - Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi arrived at the location in Syria where he was reportedly killed early on Sunday in a U.S. raid some 48 hours before the operation, a senior Turkish official said. The Turkish army had advance knowledge of the U.S. operation in Syria’s Idlib, the official said, adding that Turkey would continue to coordinate its actions on the ground with the “relevant parties”.

U.S. Imposes Sanctions on Turkish Company for Trade With North Korea

WASHINGTON — The United States imposed sanctions on Thursday against a Turkish company and two of its officers for doing business with North Korea, sending a tough signal to Pyongyang ahead of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s expected visit there this weekend. The Treasury Department accused S.I.A. Falcon International Group of being involved in trading weapons and luxury goods with North Korea, defying sanctions imposed by both the United States and the United Nations. “The international community must not stand idly by as U.N. sanctions are being circumvented,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a press statement.

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - The lira firmed slightly on Tuesday as investors weighed up the prospect of an improvement in Turkey-U.S. ties after U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he expected talks this week over the fate of a U.S. pastor on trial in Turkey. The lira has lost nearly 40 percent of its value against the U.S. currency this year on concerns about President Tayyip Erdogan’s grip on monetary policy and, more recently, due to a diplomatic row between Turkey and the United States.

Mr Erdogan lashed out at the European Union during his speech at the General Assembly. Speaking about the refugee crisis that sparked from the horrific civil war in Syria, the Turkish leader said the EU has not done quite enough to support the efforts made by Turkey. He said: "Turkey has welcomed four million refugees during the last years, 3.4m of which came from Syria.

Turkey Attracts $2.2B in Investments in First Quarter

Turkey attracted $2.2 billion in investments in the first quarter of 2018, according to Investment Support and Promotion Agency (ISPAT) Chairman Arda Ermut yesterday. Speaking to Anadolu Agency's (AA) Finance Desk in Istanbul, Ermut said Turkey also attracted 1 percent of all foreign direct investments in the world in the last 15 years. "We do not see misperceptions in investors who invest directly in our country," he said.

Turkey saw a 22% spike in home sales to foreign buyers in 2017, according to a year-end report from the Turkish Statistical Institute, or Turk Stat. Despite Turkey’s spiral into authoritarianism under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, foreigners continued to snap up homes in Istanbul and the capital city, Ankara—thanks in part to a new decree offering citizenship in exchange for luxury home purchases. In January 2017, the government enacted a new initiative whereby foreigners could get Turkish citizenship in exchange for buying a home for the equivalent of US$1 million or more.

Growth in Turkey Hits 11.1 Percent

The Turkish Statistical Institute has announced that its third-quarter GDP figures depict a growth rate of 11.1 percent year-on-year. This makes it the fastest-growing country in the G20 by a considerable margin, with China trailing behind with 6.8 percent growth. The double-digit figure marks a substantial leap from rates seen over the past year, with year-on-year growth coming in at around five percent for the first two quarters of 2017. Notably, it reflects a recovery from the contraction of 1.8 percent that was announced this time last year.

Germany: Turkey Made 81 Extradition Requests Since Failed Coup

Since the failed coup of July 2016, Turkey has requested the extradition of 81 people from Germany, according to the Justice Ministry's response to an inquiry from the Left Party's parliamentary party. The Justice Ministry, however, did not provide information on how many of those requests were based on terrorism charges or whether Berlin complied with the requests. Turkey has accused Germany of harboring thousands of suspects allegedly involved in a failed coup on July 15, 2016 that left more than 200 people dead, including soldiers and civilians.

Turkey Issues Travel Warning for Germany Before Vote

Turkey has told its citizens visiting or living in Germany to "be careful" and keep their composure against "racist and xenophobic slurs" in advance of the country's upcoming federal elections. "It is advised for our citizens in Germany or planning to visit this country to be even-tempered, keep themselves out of political discussions and absent themselves from rallies held by terrorist groups ahead of the elections," said the Turkish foreign ministry in a statement published on its official website on Saturday.
