As part of TCA's Turkish American Women's Leadership Initiative, last weekend a delegation of five Turkish American women joined members of Congress and industry representatives at the Congressional Black Caucus PAC's (CBC) Annual Retreat in New York City from July 21-23, 2017. Nineteen Congressional Black Caucus members took part in the retreat as well as special guests House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD/5th) and Reps. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY/10th), Filemon Vela (D-TX/34th), and Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX/15th). Representatives from 75 companies and organizations also took part in the retreat.

Istanbul-based Tabanlioğlu Architects has set up shop in Lower Manhattan with its first ever office in New York City. The firm, led by Murat Tabanlioğlu, announced on Monday that it’s opening a new office at 111 John Street. The firm, which has offices in Dubai, Doha and London, was founded in 1990 by Tabanlioğlu and his father, Hayati Tabanlıoğlu. Downtown Manhattan has attracted a number of major architecture firms over the years. SHoP Architects; Skidmore, Owings & Merrill; and Hill West, formerly Goldstein Hill & West, all have offices Downtown. Tabanlioğlu’s new John Street office space — 3,000 square feet on the 26th floor — coincides with the firm’s push to expand its work in New York and the United States.

Ankara responded Sunday to remarks by a senior U.S. general who admitted on Friday that he personally convinced terror group PKK's Syrian armed wing to change its name so that the U.S. could provide them military aid and a seat at the negotiating table, saying that ally states, "Do not deceive each other." General Raymond Thomas, Commander of the U.S. Special Forces Command, said Turkey was equating the People's Protection Units (YPG) with the PKK, so a solution was needed.

Washington (AFP) - Turkish forward Ersan Ilyasova and American centre Dewayne Dedmon have signed National Basketball Association (NBA) contracts with the Atlanta Hawks, the team announced on Friday in moves to bolster their front court. Dedmon's deal was reportedly for US$14 million (S$19 million) over two years with Ilyasova getting US$6 million for one season. Ilyasova, set to begin his 10th NBA season, has career averages of 11.0 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.2 assists over 609 games for the Milwaukee Bucks, Detroit Pistons, Orlando Magic, Oklahoma City Thunder, Philadelphia 76ers and Hawks. The 30-year-old second-round pick in the 2005 NBA Draft is a 44 per cent shooter, hitting 36.6 per cent from 3-point range.

Sierra Nevada Corporation has selected United Launch Alliance’s (ULA) commercially developed Atlas 5 rocket to launch the first two missions of its Dream Chaser cargo system in support of NASA’s Cargo Resupply Services 2 (CRS2) contract. The two Atlas 5 missions will carry pressurized and unpressurized cargo to the International Space Station (ISS).
Two people were killed and at least 100 injured after a magnitude-6.7 earthquake rocked popular Greek and Turkish tourist destinations on the Aegean Sea early Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey and officials said. The earthquake sent tourists and locals running into the streets on the Greek island of Kos and the Turkish port city of Bodrum shortly after 1.30 a.m. (6.30 p.m. Thursday ET), according to the Associated Press. Both destinations are popular with European vacationers during the summer high-season.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday that the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has started requesting proposals from potential master planners for a $10 billion renovation at John F. Kennedy Airport, in Queens, NY, according to Reuters.
