Prof McCarthy: “History Books Do Often Treat Turks Unfairly”

Justin A. McCarthy is a nationally and internationally recognized scholar of the Ottoman Empire, modern Turkey and the Middle East. He has published eleven books, most recently The Armenian Rebellion at Van (2006). In 1996 University of Louisville recognized him with the Award for Outstanding Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity. He holds an honorary doctorate from Boğaziçi University, Turkey, and is a board member of the Institute of Turkish Studies and the Center for Eurasian Studies (AVIM). McCarthy served in the Peace Corps in Turkey in 1969, where he taught at Middle East Technical University and Ankara University.

Three Turkish Americans got awarded as well. Turkish Scientist Ali Erdemir Is Elected A Member of The National Academy of Engineering

Distinguished Fellow Ali Erdemir from the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory has been elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), one of the highest professional distinctions accorded to engineers. The NAE recognizes Erdemir for his distinguished contributions to the science and technology of friction, wear and lubrication. Erdemir, a program lead in Argonne’s Applied Materials Division, develops new materials, coatings and lubricants with his research team to reduce friction and wear, maximizing efficiency and durability in moving mechanical systems. The discoveries and innovations stemming from his work have earned him six R&D 100 Awards and 23 U.S. patents. The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) has elected 86 new members and 18 foreign members.

Turkey’s Yildirim Sets Financing in Bid for Long Beach Shipping Terminal

Turkish port operator Yildirim Holding Inc. says it has lined up the financing to bid for a major American sea terminal against three other international companies, in a move that will sharply increase its role in North American shipping operations. Company Chairman Yuksel Yildirim told The Wall Street Journal in an interview that he has already met with regulators in Washington who are reviewing a deal that would bring a multiyear concession for the Long Beach Container Terminal in Southern California.

ŞULE GÜNER - Daily Sabah - Taner Akçok made it to Forbes "30 Under 30 Europe" 2019 list, which features innovators and young disruptors under 30. The young man is known as one of the figures in the world who is involved in the trio field of "banking-finance-technology," one of the most difficult fields of business life. He was chosen as Turkey's champion in 2009 for a Microsoft competition when he was just 18. After working at Microsoft for four years, he established his own company in Silicon Valley in 2013. In the meantime, he also received an education in innovation management at Stanford University.

Captain Marvel (2019) has broken new ground by hiring its first woman composer, and starring a female superhero (played by Brie Larson) in the lead role for the first time. And now, it’s breaking more records. In its opening weekend, the movie became the highest-grossing film scored by a woman, grossing $153 million domestically. Toprak says scoring a major comic book movie has “been a dream ever since [she] could remember”. She hired a 70-piece orchestra just to audition, so the producers could see she was capable of leading a full orchestra.

Turkey Bids Farewell to Renowned Historian Kemal Karpat

The last rites of internationally acclaimed historian Kemal Karpat were performed on Feb. 25 in a state ceremony. Karpat died of natural causes on Feb. 20 in the U.S. at the age of 96. In a funeral ceremony held at Istanbul University, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said the Turkish people should follow his footsteps and pursue "even greater" academic achievements. "He was able to approach the old debates of Turkey in a much more realistic and moderate way," Erdoğan said. Erdoğan said the birthplace of the historian, Dobruja region of Romania, could seem far from Turkey today, but Karpat was born to Turkish parents.

Prominent Turkish Historian Kemal Karpat Dead in US at 96

Internationally acclaimed Turkish historian Kemal Karpat died on Feb. 20 in the United States aged 96, a Turkish official said. Turkish Consul General in Chicago Umut Acar told Anadolu Agency that Karpat died of multi-organ failure in Madison, Wisconsin at around 6.40 p.m (1240GMT). Karpat, an expert on the Ottoman Empire and modern Turkish history, was an emeritus professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He celebrated his 96th birthday on Feb. 15, said Acar.

SOM Unveils Design for Burj Jumeira Tower in Dubai

Architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) has unveiled the design for the 550m Burj Jumeira tower in Al Sufouh, Dubai, UAE. Designed by SOM, the first phase of the skyscraper is expected to be completed in 2023. The tower is located directly between the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah hotel and the Sheikh Zayed Road and set to become the new focal point in the Dubai skyline.
Upper stories of the tower will feature dining, active programming, and multiple observation decks offering 360° views of Dubai.

Father of Dr. Oz Dies Aged 94 in Istanbul

Father of Turkish-American cardiac surgeon and talk show host Dr. Mehmet Oz has died at the age of 94 in Istanbul on Saturday, according to hospital sources. Mustafa Oz was receiving treatment for a while, said the sources, who asked not to be named, due to restrictions on speaking to the media. The sources did not provide further details of his treatment process.
