Tayfun Selen Becomes First Turkish Mayor to Be Elected in US After Being Voted Chatham Township Mayor

Tayfun Selen was sworn in Friday as the new mayor of Chatham Township in the state of New Jersey, becoming the first Turkish national to hold such a position in the United States. Once an immigrant from Turkey, Selen, a Turkey-born American citizen who came to the U.S. 22 years ago, has been an elected member of the Chatham Municipal Committee since 2017. The election result regarding Selen, who is a member of the Republican Party, was announced by Turkey's Consulate General in New York via their Twitter account.

Muslim Academicians from US, Canada Visit Turkey

A group of Muslim academicians teaching at universities in the U.S. and Canada visited Turkey and attended a conference on Tuesday. Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Yavuz Selim Kiran also attended the conference, which was jointly organized by Turkey's Center for Strategic Research (SAM) and Turken Foundation. Speaking at the conference Kiran said Turkey is closely following the U.S.’s investigation into Fetullah Terrorist Organization’s (FETO) activities. FETO and its U.S.-based leader Fetullah Gulen orchestrated the defeated coup of July 15, 2016 in Turkey, which left 251 people martyred and nearly 2,200 injured.

Judge Delays Trial of Kingston Brothers As More Charges Expected

By Ben Winslow, SALT LAKE CITY — A federal judge has delayed the trial of Washakie Renewable Energy CEO Jacob Kingston, his brother, Isaiah, and a Turkish businessman accused in a half-billion dollar fraud scheme. In an order issued Friday night, U.S. District Court Judge Jill Parrish agreed with Jacob Kingston’s attorney who requested a delay. She rejected demands by Lev Dermen and Isaiah Kingston’s attorneys for a speedy trial. Judge Parrish noted there was a massive amount of evidence in the case, including 500 gigabytes of data and 850,000 items. She said the government was giving the defense 1.3 terabytes of surveillance video and another terabyte of discovery by mid-January.

First Turk Named to Head UN Budget Committee

By Betul Yuruk, AA - NEW YORK - For the first time, a Turkish citizen has been named the head of the UN’s advisor budget committee, handling a budget of $10 billion. Cihan Terzi, set to become chair of the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions (ACABQ) on Jan. 1, first took a spot on the committee only this January. The major functions of the 16-person committee is to examine and report on the program budget submitted by the UN secretary-general to the General Assembly.

Coca-Cola Chairman Muhtar Kent to Retire After 10 Years in the Role

Coca-Cola Co. KO, +0.61% said Thursday Chairman Muhtar Kent plans to retire in April, after about 10 years in the role. Kent also served as chief executive officer of the Coke parent from 2009 to 2017, when he was succeeded by current CEO James Quincey in May 2017. The beverage giant said Quincey has been elected to become chairman after the company's annual meeting in April 2019. The stock fell 1.7% in morning trade. It has gained 6.2% year to date, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.22% has lost 1.9%.

Turkey’s Ciner Group Acquires U.S. Property for $22.9 Million

Turkish energy to media company Ciner Group has acquired a 25-foot-wide townhouse on East 55th Street, Midtown Manhattan, for $22.9 million. Ciner Group said that the Manhattan townhouse will be headquarters for a new company that has been established to make $2 billion in commitments. The 8,000-square-foot building is a Tudor-style building arrayed in purplish brick, with terra cotta details. Ciner Group acquired the property from UK video production and distribution company DLT Entertainment, Ltd.

Volkan, author of more than 50 books and a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, spoke Wednesday night at Waynesboro Public Library on "The Psychology of Immigrants and Refugees.” Sherry Von Oeyen of Staunton, who attended with her husband Bob, said she felt she learned something from Volkan’s talk about immigrants and refugees, and she does not want the U.S. to build walls.

The 12-minute performance is fashioned from artefacts from the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s history: millions of photographs, printed programmes and audio and video recordings, each one digitised and algorithmically activated to play in abstract form across the building’s dynamic metal surface. WDCH Dreams, as the production is known, kicked off the orchestra’s centennial season with the kind of brio that befits the company Zachary Wolfe described in 2017, in The New York Times, as “the most important orchestra in America. Period.”

Turkish developer Sedesco is putting together a Billionaires’ Row assemblage with the purchase of a development site for $80 million. Sedesco closed last week on its purchase of the property at 41 West 57th Street from Florida-based seller Asuman Polat, property records filed with the city Tuesday show. The purchase gives Midtown-based Sedesco about 100,000 square feet of buildable area on the block between Fifth and Sixth avenues. The company in 2012 paid $71.5 million to buy an adjacent property at 50 West 58th Street.

The award was presented to Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg; Argentine President Mauricio Macri; Hamdi Ulukaya, founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Chobani; and the late Arizona Republican Sen. John S. McCain. Frederick Kempe, president and chief executive officer of the Atlantic Council, said the Global Citizen Award was launched with three goals in mind. “First, we wanted to identify individuals who represent the sort of leadership and engagement we thought defined global citizenship at its best. Second, we hope that by recognizing these individuals, we could inspire a host of others. And finally, we wanted to underscore a pretty dramatic shift at the Atlantic Council, our own expanded global mission of galvanizing more effective efforts among friends and allies, certainly at our transatlantic core, but also globally, to secure the future at a time when we had anticipated would be a moment or an era of historic challenge,” he said.

Dr. Oz Recounts His Visits to Syrian Refugee Camps

By Faruk Zorlu, AA - ANKARA - Turkish-American surgeon and talk show host Dr. Mehmet Oz said he was greatly moved by his visits in July to refugee camps in Turkey and Syria, noting it was something he would never forget. "I had the opportunity to visit Syrian refugee camps along the Syria-Turkey border with the help of [Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority] AFAD and [the Turkish Red Crescent] Kizilay. "Despite the hardships the people we met have endured, their stories of resilience are inspiring - this is a trip that has forever changed me," Oz said Monday in a post on his Twitter account. Oz -- who is widely known for his television program The Dr. Oz Show, which has won several Daytime Emmy Awards -- visited refugee camps in Turkey's southeastern Gaziantep province and Syria's northwestern Azaz region in July.
